Help Build “Rainbow Spectrum” Site for GLBT Parents of Children with Autism

About.com

April Wheeler is the mom of a child on the autism spectrum - and a member of the GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transexual and Questioning) community. She is in the process of building a site, Rainbow Spectrum, to address the needs of parents with alternative lifestyles who are raising a child with autism. Here’s how she describes her work:

I started this site to address a need that our family has, namely to share information and advice concerning autism spectrum disorders in a safe environment for GLBTQ parents. I found a few message boards for autism, but we’ve had some less than supportive experiences on other parenting boards before. Frankly, I just don’t have the energy or patience to have to explain/defend my family while also trying to get constructive information about ASD and the, at times daily, issues we deal with because of it. I hope you find what you need here and that you help the site be as useful as possible by helping me build the resource index for GLBTQ-friendly practitioners with whom you have experience.

April invites members of the GLBTQ (and friends) to add resources to her growing list by getting in touch through her website. She notes: “My plans are basically to allow the space to grow based on user input. I will moderate the forum to keep out the spam…, but I don’t want to become the focus of the site. The focus is helping our kids and ourselves with this journey.”

Please do let April know if you have suggestions, ideas or resources to offer!
